Number Our Days

09/23/09 By Brad

"So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12

Recently, my quiet time led me to this verse in Psalm 90.  Immediately, a beautiful song by my friend Bethany Barr Phillips popped into my head.  Bethany is a recording artist and worship leader.  Her album "Roots Run Deep" is a must have in your Christian music collection and can be purchased on iTunes.  (Find Bethany on MySpace, Facebook or her website).  In "Number My Days", Bethany sings, "Teach me to number my days, that I may walk in Your ways, O Lord....And help me see Your truth, that I may walk along with You."
What is it that Bethany and this verse are trying to tell us?  And what are we supposed to do with this information?  In the book of James, we are told that our life is like steam - here for a minute and then gone.  If we live to be 80 years old, we consider it a good life.  Yet what is it when compared to eternity?  Just the other day, I found an online calculator that changes your age (or the time span between any two dates) from years into days.  As I looked at my number, I wondered how many of those had been spent for God.  I wondered how many of my days meant something for eternity.  How many of those were days spent selfishly, living for what I wanted to live for and not what God wanted me to live for?
This verse is not merely telling me to count my days, but to make my days count!  The second part of the verse says, "That we may gain a heart of wisdom."  Part of making our days count is continual learning.  We need to be constantly learning what God's Word says and how we can put it in to practice in our own lives.  Tonight (September 23, 2009) in our student ministry, we will be talking about that, and we will be looking at the example of the Bereans in Acts 17:10-15.  We are told that those in Berea searched the Scriptures daily to see if what Paul was preaching was true!  The Bereans were studying the Word of God to learn what God wanted to teach them.  I pray that I never get to the point where I think I know it all.  I ask God regularly to keep me teachable and for His wisdom!
So what about you?  Are your days just adding up to a number?  Or are you numbering your days so that they count for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ?
